FAQs

  • The science of Inshad, or spiritual singing, holds a significant place in Syria's cultural and scholarly heritage. Inshad is not merely a form of artistic expression but is deeply intertwined with spirituality and Islamic scholarship.

Inshad, as practiced in Syria, is a unique blend of music and devotion. It is considered a form of dhikr, or Remembrance of the Divine, with the power to condition the heart and soul to become more receptive to knowledge. This belief has led to a profound connection between Inshad and Islamic scholarship in Syria.

Historically, many of the leading scholars in Damascus were also accomplished munshids or spiritual singers. These scholars recognized the transformative potential of Inshad on individuals' spiritual and intellectual development. For them, Inshad was an art and a means to connect with the divine and prepare oneself to acquire knowledge.

The integration of Inshad with Islamic scholarship in Syria demonstrates the region's holistic approach to education and spirituality. It underscores the belief that singing and devotion are not mutually exclusive but can work harmoniously to enrich one's understanding of Islam and deepen one's connection with the divine. This unique tradition of Inshad has contributed to the vibrant cultural and intellectual tapestry of not just Syria but throughout the Ummah. The Asian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), Northwest Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia, and Mauritania), The Levant (Iraq, Syria, Palestine, and Jordan), Egypt, Yemen, Sudan, Senegal, Gambia, Bosnia, Turkey, etc, all have rich traditions of spiritual odes tied to Islamic scholarship. The art and practice of inshad continue to inspire scholars and seekers of knowledge worldwide.

Our primary teacher is Shaykh Samer Al - Nashar of Aleppo, a city in Syian known for producing some of the Ummah’s best munshideen. It is with the Shaykh’s blessing and permission that we have embarked on this journey. You can view some of Shaykh Samer’s work here.
